In today’s education systems, there is an increasing need for innovative methods that can engage students and encourage their critical thinking. Urban Expeditio brings an innovative approach to adventure-based learning by using gamification and artificial intelligence (AI) to allow students to actively learn through challenges in urban environments. But how can gamification enhance student engagement and make the learning process more enjoyable?

What is Adventure-Based Learning and How Does It Work in Schools?

Adventure-based learning refers to experiential learning through exploration, challenges, and problem-solving in real-life environments. In the context of the Urban Expeditio project, students participate in AI-supported gamified activities—such as “treasure hunts” in city spaces—to develop digital skills, solve tasks, and engage actively in the learning process.

This approach encourages:

  • Critical thinking – students face challenges and must analyze situations before making decisions.

  • Team collaboration – activities are often designed for group work, where students share tasks and work together toward solutions.

  • Development of digital skills – by using AI tools and digital platforms, students are better prepared for future digital professions.

  • Better connection with the city and community – by exploring urban spaces through interactive tasks, students gain new insights into their environment and its challenges.

Gamification as a Tool for Student Engagement

Gamification in education refers to the use of game mechanics—challenges, scoring, rewards, levels—to make the learning process more motivating and dynamic. In the Urban Expeditio project, gamification is implemented through:

  • AI-powered “treasure hunt” challenges – students solve tasks using digital clues and analysis of city locations.
  • Scoring system – collecting points for correct answers and completed challenges provides a clear sense of progress.

  • Leaderboards and team missions – encourages healthy competition and group work, fostering a team spirit.

  • Real-time feedback – students receive immediate insights into the outcomes of their decisions, helping them develop analytical thinking.

This approach not only makes learning more fun but also increases students’ intrinsic motivation, as they experience a sense of achievement and progress.

How AI Enhances Adventure-Based Learning

One of the key elements of the Urban Expeditio project is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance adventure-based learning. AI enables:

  • Personalized challenges – algorithms can adapt task difficulty based on the student’s knowledge level and skills.
  • Urban environment analysis – AI can process data about cities and generate relevant educational challenges.
  • Interactive scenarios – students can simulate real-life scenarios and practice problem-solving in urban contexts.
  • Quick analysis of results – gives teachers insights into students’ progress and helps identify areas that need more attention.
  • AI also supports teachers in creating dynamic lessons that are relevant and engaging for students, without adding extra workload.

Case Study: How Will Students Experience AI Challenges in Learning?

During the pilot phase of the Urban Expeditio project, students will take part in an AI-guided “Treasure Hunt” challenge using mobile applications to solve urban puzzles.

Example task: Students will need to identify an environmental issue in their city (e.g., a polluted area), analyze it using AI tools, and propose a solution.
Expected outcomes: It is assumed that students will be more engaged than in traditional lessons, and that most will report being more motivated due to actively solving real-world problems.
Feedback opportunities: Teachers will be able to track how students build autonomy in learning and show increased interest in local issues, contributing to innovative teaching approaches.

Conclusion: The Future of Education Lies in Interactive Methods

Adventure-based learning and gamification represent the future of education by enabling students to develop 21st-century skills—critical thinking, teamwork, and digital literacy—through hands-on activities. The Urban Expeditio project demonstrates how AI can become an ally in creating an inspiring and dynamic learning environment. Teachers looking to increase student engagement and make their lessons more interesting can already start applying these methods.
